Red Hill Dye Day

Posted by: Catherynne on: 13/10/2009

The Red Hill group held a dye day on Saturday 10 October – all done with food colouring.

Roving, top and yarn had been generously provided, along with a collection of food colourings you can purchase from any supermarket. The ones we mostly used were the Queen brand.

Fibre was pre-soaked in warm water with a dash of white vinegar, everything laid out, and then we were into it, experimenting with colours and intensities. Once the fibre was dyed, it was wrapped in plastic wrap (Gladwrap will do nicely), rolled up, put in a plastic grocery bag, and put in a pot to heat through and set the dye.

So easy to do, so much fun, and lots of fibre and yarn to play with at the end of it. Try it out yourself!
