Area Retreat 2011

Posted by: kim6782 on: 23/08/2011

A great time was had by all.
For those of you who missed, we’ll see you next year, but going by the excitment still in the air, there may be a rush for a space :)
Our hosts were exceptional, even becoming involved in one or two activities, while making sure we were well looked after. The meals especially wonderful due to NO cooking and NO dishes done by anyone except the inhouse crew.
The outside grounds were amazingly tranquil, considering we were in a very busy part of the city. The large trees and surrounding gardens obsorbed all the road noise.
Each individual had their own room, which was much appreciated by those who required their own time.
Our classes were attended by almost everyone, even the brand newbies who had not long been members, we were given the opportunity to learn who to sort an Alpaca fleece, what to look for in qualities, as not all fleeces are equal. We learned to become more aware of how to use space dyed fibres so as to make the most of them.
No weekend with “Non” competitive members would be complete without the odd bit of fun via a small competition or two, we were slightly politically correct by awarding a prize for the most stitches knitted in a 3 minute span and a prize for the least amount knitted. We also had a bouquet moment or 5 with a crochet flower competition, well won I heard. There was a little spindle teaching going on occassionally.
A couple of ladies who came along via public transport, one from our local Island, one who lives on a boat, seemed to have bottomless luggage, as the items they pulled seemed endless, they reminded me of a magician and his magic hat.
While we didn’t have an official show and tell, there seemed to be a flowing stream of creations on personal show everyday, with each person happy to share how they made them.
The weekend was full of learning and teaching not just the classes we had organised but the ones we all learned from each other.
We didn’t have much time to take many photos but our slide show will give you an idea of why.
Thank you to all who came along, for your generousity, and especially for those who gave their time to teach the organised classes.
